Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
