Intense Gales Leave Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to avoid going out as severe gales strike the country.

Powerful gusts reaching speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 homes without power and led officials to call off over 100 flights, as reported by regional news sources.

The gales are influencing the whole South Island and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have announced rare high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in key areas including Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Extensive Impact and Crisis Response

The power cut is primarily influencing homes mainly in the South Island, while authorities state that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, and trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being struck by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was swept into moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a incident that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the urban area have been suspended due to the winds, and some roads and libraries are not operating.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to assist disaster response efforts.

Labor Protests Amid Harsh Conditions

The powerful gales on this day come as many of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been termed a "major walkout", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the extreme weather has forced them to change certain arrangements, with several external protests relocated inside or abandoned.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Officials have announced fire bans for fear of bushfires.
