Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
