RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
