At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
